’Gary Lucas Vs The Dark Poets - Beyond The Pale’ 8/10 (Some Bizzare) His work with Jeff Buckley and Captain Beefheart probably makes Gary Lucas the worlds most popular avant-rock guitarist, though his solo work can lack focus. Here, his solo pieces mingle with tracks recorded with electronic composer James R Hunter, aka The Dark Poets, whose samplescapes, synth beds and vocal samples about things like military mind-control techniques recall the dark portents of Cabaret Voltaire. Highlights include a resonant cover of part of Popol Vuhs Aguirre, Wrath of God soundtrack; an exhilarating "Judgement at Midnight" incorporating swirling National steel guitar phrases over a synth drone bed pockmarked with found-sound fragments; "Breath of Bones", a delicate tangle of guitar tendrils; and "Teds Theme", a lovely sequenced samba-shuffle burnished with glinting guitar. Solo showcases include the glistening Frippertronic-style guitar tones of "Rosemarys Baby" and the almost electric-flamenco flurries of "Rise Up To Be". Pick of the album:The Judgement at Midnight, Teds Theme, Aguirre & Rosemarys Baby.
Terrorizer Magazine Reviewed By Sam Rackman "When it comes to eclectic post-punk Gary Lucas Vs The Dark Poets knows where its at. Beyond The Pale, Released through Some Bizarre, is a collaboration between the Grammy nominated/one time Captain Beefheart guitarist and the British electronica outfit. The result flits between sounding like Tubeway Army remixed for the 21st century and Nick Cave playing acid-infused bluegrass."

is unusual in that they are primarily a “virtual’ band formed by Ted Bell
and Patrick Chauncey, conceived, executed, marketed, discovered and signed
before the two band members ever actually met in person. They formed in
June of 2007, and within a few weeks developed a large underground following.
GL1TCHG0R3 (glitch - gore) was born out of an experiment to create a new
fusion of sound somewhere between hip-hop, improvisational jazz fusion,
noise, IDM and glitch. Stumped at how to proceed with this task, they
invoked Eris the goddess of chaos through song, art, insanity and an organ
donation. The Mother of mechanized music was indeed pleased - so pleased
that she plucked out her right eye, and created the most terrifying weapon
of mass destruction in the universe to take its place among us. Thus Gearball,
also known affectionately as Mister Twinkles, came to become the band's
whimsical cyclopean mascot. Travel with Mister Twinkles and his friends
through a wild acoustic romp into the depths of cosmic chaos. And if you
listen closely, betwixt the screams of the undead and alien tribal rhythms,
you'll hear the dancing laughter of Eris grinding away at the humming
rotors of creation.

PEDRO INF No.3 in the Catapult Records (Cardiff) cool cuts chart (5/2/08) Always good to hear something out of my comfort zone. Very impressed. Will keep an eye on this dude. favouritetrack: Deep Night (Dj Moneyshot - XFM South Wales/Various – Wales) Kinda techy with industrial, electro, chill out overtones. I Like. Thank u for sending (Jerry Bouthier - Boom Box/Family/Kitsunã© Resi-Reviewer For M8/Update/Notion – UK) Really like this. Has a nice old skool Chicago feel to it as well as sounding very now. Great! (Neil Scott/Diablo - Nish Nash Nosh/Homoelectric/El Diablos Social Club – Manchester/Uk) Solid release. Stand out for me is Deep Night which works on my floors. Good stuff. favouritetrack: Deep Night (TC Monckton - On @ Digital Newcastle, Wax:On @ Stylus Leeds, Arcane @ NUSU Newcastle) Interesting. Some Bizarre is certainly an appropriate label for him. It will take a while to fully get my head round this, but i like the palate of sounds. favouritetrack: I Love Trees (Fil OK – NagNagNag/333/Various – UK) I like the old skool sound of the beats on this. (Dan Hayes – Lock Tavern/Aitbf/Various – UK) This has got some nice grooves and sounds in it. The first track "Deep Night" is probably my favorite up tempo track here, I like what sounds like a bit of a meltdown at the end of the track. But I think the second track "Crazy BBB" and the last track "Love Trees", are my favorite tracks. The Aphex type synth sounds work well on these tracks. favouritetrack: I Love Trees (Leaf Troup - The Social/The Amersham Arms/Various – London) Interesting ideas. Nicely done. (Anthony Vicious – Hotwerks/Various – London) Nice production. (Rob Smith – Smith & Mighty/Various – Worldwide) I LOVE this! It would be good with a longer edit though. Feel VERY free to send me more...! (Pjotr - Tête À Claques @ Berns/The Electric Gay Ballroom @ Kolingsborg/T @ Berns/Various – London/Stockholm/Various) Abstract! Different and good. Not commercial at all and definitely an acquired taste but I like it. Any chance of a finished album, please!!! Favourite track: CRAZY BBB (Johnny Luv - Jamm/Various - London/Surrey) Some yellow magic orchestra shit going on somewhere here. Mad world. Favourite track: deep night (Cuban Brothers – Phatlace/Fabric – London/Cardiff/Various/Worldwide) Good stuff. Look forward to checking the rest of the album. (Nico De Ceglia - The End/Radio 1/Various – London/Various) Lurrrverly! Deep, without being noodly and the production is just the right side of raw. Nice one! (Capoeira Twins - Tru Thoughts/Hope -Glasgow/London/Various/Worldwide) Interesting,
diverse stuff. Good to listen to. Not sure if Id play but would be totally
rinsing Crazy BBB if it was 3 mins longer! too short! Get him to make
a longer version! Favourite track: Crazy BBB (Ill Will - Adventures Close
to Home – London/Various)

Kontour - Scanners (CD Some Bizarre Records) www.side-line.com 01/05/08 David Hunt aka Kontour is an English artist who has already been active for more than 20 years now. He for sure is a musician who remains faithful to a sort of early electronic tradition reminding me of the 80s. More than once “Scanners” evokes some early and good old Cabaret Voltaire memories. Especially the 2 debut songs are really cool and essential. There’s this brute electronic construction made with instruments like a Moog or MXR effect processor. It creates these typical electronic vibes while the good-old rhythm box percussion sound only reinforce the 80s feeling. The male vocal parts are pretty zombie-like, but totally fitting in to the music. “The Kennedy Syndrome” and “Loose Wire” are definitely strong openers. I’m not affirming that after such a great debut the album slowly stagnates, but it’s just that the other tracks left are less convincing. “Pressure Point” is a track that brings the album again to a higher level. Kontour also reveals a more experimental side, which brings some diversity, but less new high lights. It doesn’t take away that this album will for sure please the lovers of early Cabaret Voltaire and other bands in the same line. (DP:7)DP.
